This book is SO EXCELLENT. It's like Jemisin took these stories about boys going out to avenge their father and took it to a whole new level by making it about gods and mothers. I mean, at the heart, this is a book about women and how ruthless and necessary they are. How much female nature is about creation is destruction. A central theme throughout the whole book is Mother as God in the eyes of children. And jealousy. And love.

I am having a hard time putting words to this because it was about so many things and at the same time, I left it feeling like everything was interwoven so perfectly and so well. An amazing first novel.
