Thanks to Hyperion Publishers for a ARC!

(4-9-12)This book was a "skimmer" for me--I don't mean that I skimmed it, but that the plot moved very quickly, I understood the characters and their relationships right away and the pages turned themselves. Leroy did quite a bit of research on the clothes, food, everyday life during that time. Hard to realize that during the occupation they were cut off from all communication from relations.

I would have liked more depth, perhaps more background on the neighbors and more angst with the mother-in-law's condition--I would have thought there would have been much more work involved with her. I really don't think Viv's secret was really a secret from her daughters, but there was no confrontation.

The ending was very abrupt. I would have liked to have seen the aftermath when her husband came back and the town's reaction spelled out--again, there was no confrontation which I think would have made a more compelling read.
