I loved this collection of short stories. There isn't a weak story in the bunch (not surprising, given that it's a collection of the best short fiction of the year).
The book kicks off with a conversation between the books' editors (Pasha Malla, Joan Thomas, and Alissa York) about the jurying process. During that discussion, Malla notes that "originality is what really set these twelve stories apart from the rest of the pack" (meaning the other 62 stories that were submitted by journal editors, but that didn't end up in the collection). He also notes that many of the stories in the collection benefit from repeat readings, adding, "To me that's the mark of a truly strong piece of short fiction: something that engages on the surface, but then, when you go back to it a second (and third) time, gets richer, more nuanced and layered."
Highly recommended for others who can't get enough of the short story form.

As a writer who appeared in a Journey Prize Anthology some years ago I'm delighted you reviewed this collection. It's a wonderful annual event and a generous gift from author James A. Michener who donated the Canadian royalties from his novel 'Journey' to set up the prize. Thanks.
