Interesting fictionalized historical novel about a Jewish boxer turned for-hire tough guy. Set in early 18th century London against the backdrop of the birth of the stock market in England it tells the tale of the rise of "stock-jobbery" and how the promise of wealth supplanted actual wealth and created huge fortunes, losses, and inequalities in London of the time before bursting in the first crash. The resulting "conspiracy of paper" leads to intrigue and murder and we get to follow along as our protagonist, Weaver, traipses through London in search of his father's murderer and the men behind the conspiracy. Characters like his doctor/philosopher/playwright friend Elias and his nemesis Jonathan Wild, king of the underworld make it worth the read.
