This was a hard book to review. I love the IAD series and Lothaire has always stood out throughout the series, so when I found out that Cole's next book was Lotharie's, I had really high expectations. I basically read this book in one day. I didn't want to put it down, but I also found it frustrating at times. Lotharie is a bad, bad, bad boy. He is arrogant, manipulative, cruel, and anti-social. Cole does a great job of taking characters who are amoral and difficult to like, into characters we root for and sometimes sympathize with. She has done this with Lothaire but often times his actions are frustrating and his treatment of Elizabeth for the first 85% of the book are hard to swallow at times.
Elizabeth and Lothaire have a lot of chemistry and their intimate interactions are off the charts. The hottest scene by far was Elizabeth’s seduction, hillbilly style. Speaking of Elizabeth, she is the perfect foil for Lothaire. She stands up to him and tries to show him that happiness can be found in a cruel world.

One of the best scenes in the book was near the end with Lothaire and Nix. The reader gets to see Nix let down her guard, briefly, but I loved it. Their friendship has always been odd and I appreciated that Cole took some time to explain why they are adversaries, but always have each other's backs. The references to chess "white queen and black king can call a draw for a time..." was perfect. The ending was great and I cannot wait to see where this story goes.

✽ Sharon is an emotional book junkie ✽ i loved that white queen/black king too! and his book!

Irene Exactly! I'm having troubles with a review because of Lothaire! He kills “anyone” without a care (except maybe children), is arrogant to the extreme, and he couldn't have possibly treated her worse through at least half of the book! Then has the gall to think "Why doesn't she love me? I give her everything and I'm the most attractive man in the world?!? *hitting my head against the wall*
