A very good historical novel, but it has one of those minor glitches that serve as a warning to writers of historical chapter, a tiny fraction of the book, takes place in California during the Gold Rush, and it's the only section of the book with embarrassing historical errors...things that the author may have thought were too minor to double-check.
Otherwise, other than one of the fictional villains being a bit too cartoony in his inconsistently evil attitudes, the book is excellent. It's a fascinating story of xenophobia as told from both sides, and the history that goes with this tale is equally interesting. There's an excellent "suggested reading" section at the back, and the book is illustrated with pieces done by the central character himself, in real life.
