My opinion of this book suffered due to all the hype I'd heard about it. I've heard lots about Cherie Priest, and seen this book all over the place and noted as The Steampunk Novel out right now. I'm not sure what my expectations were, but I expected to enjoy the book more than I did. It seemed like a long slog through some slow plot before the action really picked up.

It appears to be part of a series, and by the end of the book, I did find some of the characters introduced to be rather interesting. So perhaps later books have potential if they get OUT of the walled up Seattle area. But I found the villain and his mysterious identity to be boring and the younger protagonist to be obnoxious.

I think had the book been half the length I wouldn't have been so cranky by the end of it. It just seemed like much of the agonizing over familial relationships and descriptions of failed technology were filler.
