** spoiler alert ** Before I figured out what was happening with the way the book was constructed I was annoyed and confused. Basically, there are two Will Graysons hence the title and two authors, Green and Levithan. The chapters alternate between the two Wills and the big clue which I didn’t get was that one chapter was written traditionally and the other chapter written minus capitals and punctuation. The point of the book is sexual orientation and its slow and painful process of discovery. The main character is Tiny who happens to be outwardly gay and enormous physically, tall, heavy and a football player. Because he is also funny and self-deprecating Tiny gets along with everyone. Will Grayson #1 is his best friend who has always stood by him since childhood. This Will likes girls but is shy so Tiny helps him meet Jane. We weren’t sure about Will’s relationship with Tiny at first either. The second Will Grayson grapples with being gay, is unsure how to proceed and suffers from clinical depression. Through an online relationship with Isaac, Will goes to meet this chat-room friend and finds out that Isaac is really a girl from school. Crushed, Will hangs around the meeting place and runs into the other Will and Tiny. Will #2 and Tiny fall for each other but Will, fearing rejection, cannot handle Tiny’s strong and unconditional love for him. The whole story about relationships, being true to you and being honest with others culminates in a musical written and acted by Tiny about his relationships and quest for love. This is a powerful, confusing, funny but helpful book that will appeal to some students who persevere with the book’s style and possibly make some students feel better about themselves.
