I can't decide if Rodney Crowell is lyrical or a bit of an over-writer, but the bottom line is that I've been speeding right through this memoir of his hard-bitten youth. Hell, memoirs of hard-bitten youth are a dime a dozen, but his ne'er-do-well daddy and his Pentecostal yet wildly eccentric mom are riveting. His description of his grandmother is downright poignant and beautiful. I guess the true test is how much I remember this book later, but for now, I'm riveted.
