As usual, Jim Thompson created a character that at first seemed to be a simple man that was sheriff of a small town. However, this good-hearted cop quickly becomes a homicidal sex-fiend that made me cringe with his maliciousness. It was actually pretty amazing because at first, you really think he’s short a few brain cells, but as the story progresses, you realize that he’s sharp and quick. Sadly, I found myself laughing out loud with some of the pickles he got himself into, and enjoyed reading about how he got out of them. This book is definitely going down as one of the few crime books that truly surprised me and I want to jump into another Thompson book as soon as I can!
