I hoped to like this book, having done a fair amount of reading about Vincent. I am very interested in his life, and this is the most famous book about him (although not the best), albeit it is fiction.

I found the book to be poorly written (I thought the same about The Agony and the Ecstasy). Historical fiction has no obligation to be true to the known facts, and Irving didn't stray too far afield. But his writing is not elegant, not clean, not well crafted. I found the writing and thus the book to be mediocre. What was great was the subject and so it was Vincent who saved the book and made reading it worthwhile. After all, Vincent's story is very compelling and shined through the lackluster writing.
