I found this book to be just "okay" because the tone is too naive and childish. I would not recommend this book for girls or young women because the main character is too weak. I don't like it when she calls herself "very stupid" at one point in the book. It's just too plain vanilla. I like smarter books for youth, like those written by Richard Peck.

I also found the book to be dated in terms of the ultra-extreme gender depictions. Rose is so dainty I can barely stand it. Meanwhile, all of her male cousins are smart, adventurous, and highly accomplished. It's depressing.
