Chloe sees dead people, only she doesn’t know it. Since a traumatic incident in her childhood, followed by her mother’s death, she has led an ordinary life with a rich and largely absent father, loving aunt, and a series of housekeepers. When she gets her period and sees a grotesquely melted janitor all in the same day, her subsequent hysteria leads to a two-week stay at Lyle House, a residential home for troubled teens. Is Chloe really seeing ghosts, or is she experiencing the onset of schizophrenia, as the staff suggest? Given the fact that this was written by Kelley Armstrong, the answer is clear, but we are still left wondering, along with Chloe, who is on her side, and what the other kids’ problems are – and whether they are of supernatural origin. This lacks the depth of character development I enjoyed in Armstrong’s werewolf series, but it is the entertaining start of a trilogy.
