Among all the hollow religious and pseudo-scientific justifications found in this volume are one or two practical economically-based essays that clearly show why the South could not simply abandon slavery. If you take the word of the Southern antebellum writers the Civil War would be a battle not of states' rights, but of property rights and financial survival.
