Thomas is the seventh son of a seventh son, and with little else to find for Thomas to do, his father has set up an apprenticeship with a Spook. The Spook is a protector of the local people from all things that go bump in the night. Thomas has always been afraid of the dark, but his Mam tells him that the seventh son of a seventh son is special and that he will be good at being a Spook. So Thomas goes off to learn the trade.

After passing the Spook's first test (spending the night in a haunted house), Thomas is tasked with learning about boggarts. Then the Spook is called out of town and Thomas gets himself mixed up with witches, and he must use everything he's learned (and a lot of courage) to keep the witches from killing him and his family.

I had a fun time with this book. There was a warning not to read certain pages after dark (on the back cover), and these were intensely creepy scenes. Still, unless reading this book after dark, it wasn't too scary. It was also interesting that among the scary creatures, there were some that weren't so bad (the Spook has a boggart bound inside his kitchen which acts as his maid). This is the kind of timeless story that kids looking for something scary can read for years to come.
