This was a great, fast moving East Texas noir novel, just what you'd expect from Joe Lansdale. His writing is really one of a kind. He effortlessly combines humor, beauty, slice of life realism, with over the top action sequences, and deeply dark and frightening imagery and situations. His frequent protagonists, Hap and Leonard, are a team unlike any other in fiction. The book's only shortcomings are in the plot department, which starts out ingeniously and ends somewhat predictably. The joy in reading Lansdale isn't really in his plot, he's not going to serve up some surprise ending that'll kick you in the butt. Its in his excellent imagery, his frequently hilarious dialog, and his ability to tell tall tales without making them seem like hyperbolic campfire fare. He's an extremely talented writer, and I for one am very happy that he is extremely prolific and has had some mainstream success, as his books are easily found everywhere. I've yet to read anything by him that was less than a damn good time.
