I just can't bring myself to rate this book, because while I enjoyed the story quite a bit and read it quickly from start to finish, I'm going to give you fair warning...this is another book with a cliffhanger ending. And if anyone has followed my reviews for any period of time, you already know I'm not a fan of cliffhangers. From an author whose last release in this series will have been over 2 years ago by the time this book releases? I think it's extremely disturbing to get a book that ends with a cliffhanger. It just...feels disrespectful to the reader, I guess.

But, I did enjoy the book and we do learn more about all of the main characters' backgrounds, so I think fans of this series will find this a satisfying installment in the series in that regard. I definitely did. I do wonder how many more books are planned in the series (the author's website doesn't say) and when we can expect future installments, given how this one ends (the author's website also doesn't indicate that). I really like this author's writing, and the world she's built, but I wish she hadn't chosen quite this construct for the end of this book.

jD Thanks. I appreciate your heads-up. I hate cliffhangers especially when the author is not puting out books frequently. I'll wait.

Angela James I really feel kind of guilty for being so upset by the ending, and for mentioning it in such detail, because I did like the book and will be very happy to see the next one release.

jD I got so mad at an ending one time that I gave the book 1 star until the next book came out. Then I gave it the four it deserved. I feel cheated and dupped when books are unfinished like that. Not cliffhanger but unfinished stories. It's crap. You can repost later, it's good you got it out of your system.

Angela Thanks for the warning on that! It won't strike me so hard when I get to it now. I've been looking forward to this book for a while, because of the world that has been built. I hope the next book comes out before another 2 years though.

Michelle I think I remember something from the forum (that has since been shut down) saying there will be 8 Cassandra Books? I think.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ It was not for a lack on the author's part, the release date was delayed.

Kayl Wow another cliffy, damn. Eventhough I'm forwarned about it, and am now fully expecting it, Ill still be so shocked and annoyed when it actually happens! its okay to say "cliffhanger ending, be prepared!" but in all actuality I think everyone will get so caught up in the story the expected cliffhanger will still make us all flip out, curse karen chance (then apologize profusely) and be driven to tears! well i know i likely will be anyway.

thankyou for the warning though =D and its great you loved it, cant wait!

(due to cliffy ending, i may have to do a 'georgina kincaid' and limit myself to five pages a day!) yeah right >.>

Sandra Thanks for the warning. I hate cliffhanger's too. Especially when it is usually at least 12 months before the next book comes out. It's kind of silly really because by the time the book comes out you have lost any sense of urgency generated by the cliffhanger anyway. All it does is make readers feel frustrated and cheated. There are heaps of great series which finish the individual story in each book but have enough going for them that you are just as keen to read the next book in the series without having to go for the cliff hanger to try to get people back.
I remember reading one book that ended on a cliffhanger, then the author died before the next book was written which was very sad (but also frustrating in a horribly selfish way that I probably shouldn't admit to).

Has I heard there will be four more after this book. This is from her facebook page. And thanks for the headsup about the cliffhanger.

Molly I read on her website that part of the reason the book came out so longer after CtD was b/c Karen had some health problems she was dealing with. So hopefully book 6 won't be AS long of a wait.

Shannon C. Thanks for the heads up over the cliffhanger. I hate cliffhangers too! I'll wait to read this one until the next one is out.

I am with you Shannon. I'll wait for the next Cassie Palmer and the next Chicagoland Vampire book. I hate cliffhangers.

Jcooper I just finished the book and was debating on how to rate it primarily because of the cliffhanger. I agree with you 100%- there are satisfying revelations in this story but that cliffhanger....

Teresa B. thanks for the heads up..I just starting reading the series so I'll wait until book 6 comes out before reading this book
