Enjoyed this a lot. Excellent worldbuilding and pacing, interesting characters. I really wish it had been a standalone, rather than the first in a trilogy -- this is totally my own fault for reading five or six first-in-a-trilogy books so close together, but I'm getting pretty tired of the open-endedness. To be fair to this book, Bacigalupi resolves a few of its subplots with great (and memorably icky) finality.
