A pulp-a-licious, tragic crime novel from one of the genre’s ace writers; its characters might as well be aflame and reek of brimstone, they’re so inundated in wickedness. The book slyly uses Los Angeles’ suburban megaplex–its sprawling anonymity, its get-rich-quick desperation, its rivers of asphalt and neon, its rotten core–to mirror the interior states of Thompson’s characters, who are willing to put a bullet in both kith and kin for a few bucks.
