With the combination of the third and fourth books of the Dexter series (this being #4) I was thinking about giving up the series altogether. This book is by far the least interesting of the series so far. Nothing really happens. Dexter hardly kills, the main antagonist hardly does anything, and the side characters of the series barely make an appearance. Most of the book is Dexter's inner monologue on various subjects, and although they can be amusing at times, I would rather have a plot. As I was nearing the end of the book my mind was all set to give this book one star and I was going to abandon the series, but then things actually started to happen. Unfortunately this was not enough to save the book, but it did remind me of why I liked the series in the first place and why I like Jeff Lindsay's writing style so much. All the suspense I needed to stick it out with the series was all packed into the last few pages.
