Hunger (Gone, #2)
by Michael Grant (Goodreads Author)

A nice continuation in the "Gone" series - and if you thought the first one was violent, this is where things get bad. The impenetrable dome now called the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone) has been up for a while now, and the chief preoccupation is food. Kids are getting hungry, everybody's desperate, and poor leader-in-charge Sam is going crazy trying to keep this horror show under control. If starvation weren't bad enough, other threats loom: the maelevolent underground force known as the Darkness, which is still reaching out into any minds it can; and the amoral telekinetic Caine who might be having a nervous breakdown but is still plotting to bring down Sam and his friends. Don't be fooled by the YA genre; Grant tackles some tough topics: nervous breakdowns, cannibalism, torture, and outright war between children. More than one child will die (Chapter 1 has a shocking death right off the bat, so skip your lunch when starting this book out) and poor overworked Sam gets a hell of a beating at the hands of the pychopathic Drake, who is one of the nastiest villains I've ever seen. The writing is smoother than the first, the pacing breakneck, and characters like the snarky Diana and the swaggering faster-than-a-speeding-bullet Brianna lighten the mood with good quippy one-liners. A solid continuation of the Gone series, and plenty of threads still to be tied up.
