This was an absolute page turner. I had things I needed to do today, but had to devote over 6 hours to finishing it, pushing other priorities to the back burner. The survival at sea or the survival of prison camps would have made compelling fiction, but knowing it was a true story, and that one man (two, actually) survived one after the other made it riveting. As I was reading it, I wondered how Laura Hillenbrand was able to gather the most minute, but relevant details to weave this story together. The answer was 7-8 years of intense research. I assumed the hero of the story must have died by now, but incredibly, he is alive and well at 94.
