This book killed me. It was perfectly written and absolutely tragic. I read Banewreaker and at it's conclusion I had an inkling that the series would not conclude the way I wanted it to and this book confirmed that from the first chapter. I still held out hope that they'd win, and clung to my hope fiercely through all the horrible events. I kept expecting them to win (especially since Jacqueline Carey tends to give happy endings in her other book series)
Even though this book tore me to pieces I loved it. I don't think I've ever cried this much reading a book, either. It was awful. From the first page I got the feeling my favorite characters were doomed, and Carey managed to completely draw me in. As they lost, I felt their pain.
