I enjoyed this little book. It had a good beginning that had promise and continued to be entertaining. I got a little bored toward the middle with Elnora's "goodness" and the verbal exchanges reminiscent of my most hated Sense & Sensibility type books. But once I got through that it was ok.
There were a few things that bothered me though. Is it just me or was it not ultra weird the total 180 her mom pulled? Is that even possible after all they had been through? Just seemed totally staged to me. Also, totally inadequate explanation of who the heck Freckles and the Angel are. Either I missed it (and I did go back to try to figure it out but couldn't) or am too stupid to have picked it up. I think there was an attempted explanation near the end but by then I didn't care enough to scrutinize it further. The last thing was her fixation with wanting to fit in and have friends sometimes and other times she acted like it was the last thing she wanted. After high school none of those all-important associates were ever even mentioned again despite the fact that she didn't leave the area. I know the book's rationale but it felt false.
I do have to say the book had such potential in so many areas but it copped out with romance. But, I liked it despite the moosh.

Gene Stratton-Porter wrote a book titled "Freckles" and although it's not exactly a sequel "A Girl of the Limberlost" is a sort of continuation of the first book.
