** spoiler alert ** Meh. The writing/ characterization was sloppy. The story was fully predictable, with the reader being able to figure out supposed 'reveals' way ahead of the main character.

**Spoilers** (Haha, unless you've started reading the book. Then you've probably already figured out the plot).

My favorite example of this sloppiness is when the MC finally realizes she comes from the line of witches- not because she is able to do magic (which at this point in the story, she HAS done) but because her *first name* has a similar pattern as the line of witches. Not her shortened nickname that is used by everyone that knows her (friends, family, and professors)- except for the one and only time someone uses her full names and it reminds her of her full name. Because, you know, she used a shortened version of her name, and that made her forget all about her real legal name, that as student, would be all over her school ID she keeps talking about having to show everyone to get into a library or historical society. I wonder how long it would have taken her to figure it out if someone hadn't said her name to her.

The other is her utter inability to be concerned with her advisor's increasing odd, demanding, and erratic behavior as anything other than stress. He stalks her to deserted library stacks in the special manuscripts section to demand she hand over the book. And although she's upset and doesn't want to give him the book, she just thinks he's stressed? And she's so surprised when he's 'revealed' to be the bad guy- she's shocked?
