I also went through an L.M. Montgomery phase, and especially loved this lesser-known Cinderella/Ugly Duckling story about the lonely 29-year-old Valancy. It was so satisfying to read about her getting out from under her overbearing family (one of whom was named "Cousin Stickles"), her health worries, and her (largely self-imposed) spinsterhood. Montgomery is so good at writing the mental/emotional side of romance -- the thoughts, fears, and fantasies that girls go through in their own heads, independent of any interaction with the object of their affection.
