Unedited glitches suggest the story was originally written to include three murders and that was reduced to two: at the beginning, the squad has already coined the crime Lonely Heart Murders, when only one body had been found; at the end there is reference to three murders, when not.

Other glitches popped to my editor eye, even though I was reading for fun (This was during Reading for Fun Week) such as mention at the end of confessing all to Llewellyn ("...it was a relief to Rafferty to know he could confide in Llewellyn...") when fourteen pages before had been a long scene of him telling his partner and the man's reaction; also a reference to Rafferty's wife in present terms when she had been dead for several years ("He felt enough of a fool already without the world, his wife and Llewellyn's cousin knowing just how much of an idiot he'd been") Nonetheless the overtly devicey plot was fun to read; Rafferty and Llewellyn are good characters.
