The belief that blood is thicker than water clouds the decision-making of a North Carolina man and his family. Acquitted of murder and kicked off the family farm five years ago, young Adam Chase returns to his hometown to clear the air and winds up solving a crime in which the cops are no longer interested and in the process discovers why he and his family are so screwed up. Why won't he hand over a crucial piece of evidence that would lead to the identification of a killer? Because before he goes to the cops, he needs to know who. In case it's "someone he loves" (p.163, hardcover ed.) How this issue is resolved is only revealed at the end of the story. Was the killer someone he knows? Someone he loves? Does the killer get off the hook? Does Adam get the girl? Which girl? Does Adam make up with his family and friends? What are Adam's final decisions? My, my. Emotion-driven characters.

Nophoto-u-25x33 Hi Wayne,
That was a great review. Now I feel like I've got to read the book. I'm reading On Chesil Beach (about half way through) by McEwan. So far it is very interesting, very introspective, and very character-oriented (as opposed to action-oriented, which it is not at all!).
