Th new series took a while to really hit it's stride with the books. Th Deviant Strain has all the makings of a good ninth doctor book, but ends up falling short of the mark. It's not a bad book in any way, but it's nothing that would blow you away.

The story is very cookie cutter: mystery signal, a military presence, something not what it seems, and people who don't quite add up. That said, some special mention for the parts about Jack. His work with the catatonic is both filled with foreshadowing as well as shoeing a side of jack that doesn't come out until torchwood.
