OK, props to any writer who can take the phrase "kiss of Death" and make it sexy! I picked this up at a closing bookstore because the price was good and I liked the cover. I know, slim reasons for buying a book, but oh, goodness, did the author deliver! In fact, I have to say this is my favorite series debut of the year. An intriguing world that considers what if the fae and witches had engineered their coming out decades ago, and by doing so opened up lot of new territory (literally, as in the 54th State in the Union), what would the world look like? And who would be populating that world?
So far, I like the population of this world a LOT.
The heroine, Alex Craft, reminds me of early Anita Blake (in a good way) back when she used to focus on crimes and catching bad guys. Alex has an innate gift that needs to be used or she risks nasty consequences. She has family issues that shape her current behavior. Her luck sucks when it comes to getting involved in situations way above her pay grade. And she has pulled into her orbit two males, each dangerous--and, believe it or not, sweet to her--in his own way. One offers body heat without sex, the other a kiss of distraction. And that's pretty much all I can say without spoiling. God, I love men with a sweetness to them!
On the other hand, while undeniably drawn to her, each male clearly has secrets and a hidden agenda. And what little Alex does know about them points to potential future plots that I'm already dying to read. So delicious! From this first introduction, there is no way the heroine (not to mention the reader!) can avoid falling hard for both of them, and sooner rather than later. I have to say, the author has written two love interests that are equally viable. I'm loving them both!
I liked Alex because we get to see her at the bottom of her power arc. She isn't hell on wheels, but you get the sense she's on her way there. If she lives long enough. But even though she takes a few hits (physical and emotional), she keeps on going without whining about it. I like her survivor mentality. The novel did a great job of introducing her, her world and what might be coming (all kinds of trouble brewing!).
This storyline was satisfying, but really just a taste. Throughout the latter 2/3 of the book, I kept getting the feeling that I'd been invited on an E-ticket ride that is just beginning. In fact, I'm thrilled the 2nd book is out this summer. Otherwise I'd be grumbling about the wait. Oh, heck, I'll be grumbling anyway!
