It's been a long time since I read Ralph's Party, but I remember I really loved it at the time so I hoped for more of the same here. However I really didn't enjoy this book.
The writing felt clumsy - I felt the jumps between time frames didn't work, Ralph's new-found 'religion' was uncommitted (he experiences 'something' but won't actually settle on it being a God of any particular 'flavour'...), I didn't like Jem at all as a character, and I mean I *really* didn't like her. I don't think I properly understood her motivations, what the hell the she was thinking/doing. It's pretty depressing reading - a relationship falling apart - and after all the misery and poor communication between the two of them, and the things they get up to, I was unconvinced by their cobbled together happy ending.
