I've been waiting to find a new favorite book and I think this was it. I read it in two days--too horrible days at the hospital when there was a lot of waiting around and was glad I had a good book to read. I loved the author's beautiful, fresh language. It was absolutely amazing to read. I loved the characters and the story. I liked the perspective--as I think people tend to put WWII Germany into two groups--the persecuted Jews and the cruel Germans. But here we have the perspective of the Germans who weren't cruel, who were stuck in situations they would rather not have been in and were sympathetic to the Jews. I've never been so happy to lose my book-choice vote at book club before.
