I read this for a film-studies course in college, years before I discovered that its writer was Harper Lee’s best friend (who also wrote, incongruously, Breakfast at Tiffany’s). Capote shocked readers with this scrupulously researched account of four brutal murders in a quiet Kansas farmhouse. The film was interesting, but the book is fascinating.
