Ok.
So I read it.
People told me how I am either not going to like it or I am going to love it.
But the thing is...they told me if I do not like it it will be because of the adultery.
It's not that.
It's just that the book was...shallow.
But then again...this is a work done by Brenda Joyce.
She is something of a sado/maso thing for me.
I hate all of her books.
I hate her themes.
I hate her stupid villains that have no point what so ever and act as sane as a schizophrenic.
But I always go back to her.
Because I just can not phantom the fact that she has such a big fetish for adultery, bastards and generally un-love.
I have no idea if she just has a perverse kick for this stuff or you know, she gets it from real life...but how ever you turn it,it just never comes out as lovable.

I like bodice rippers. I like besotted heroes. I even like them jealous and stalkerish.
The perfect example of all this are book like To Love An Earl.
Brrr. I loved that evil hero. :)

On the other hand in this book...pft. What is there to love?
It was a shocker to find a Brenda Joyce heroine that had a spine. It was a stupid half spine but a spine non the less!
But the hero?Oh...the hero.
Oh yes, yes, the hero! Or should I say-the moron knight that has sex all over the place for all the stupid reasons-revenge,forgetfulness,etc. Are we supposed to be sorry for him?
I just wanted him to get an STD. Really. An while doing all of this he follows the heroine around having hissy fits about other men, wanting her over and over again even thou he married her to another...it's like an medieval drama! And when you insert the Disney stile eeeeevil other woman...the half sister of the heroine (it's like Cinderella!Only with murder! Who has the prop glass slipper? We are behind schedule people!).
You would think with all the drama, betrayal, etc there would be a plot. Not really. The author just took one random historical event, made up a few characters that behaved like morons and added some fighting and death. Nice.
At the end of the book I was frustrated for the lack of plot, lack of substance of any kind and oh yes,the meaningless cheating that was just skimmed over as if not happening.

This is when the following happened:
The heroine is pregnant. She now is told (after her half sister tried to kill her and other stupid farce) that her...lover? Brother in law and what not...already has 6 children. All sons!
Why do we care if they are sons? I have no idea. I guess it just show what a manly man he is!
A man that can not pull his penis out of anybody,it seems.
What's not to like,yeah?
But he is very happy to be a father to his seventh son. (why is it important that it is a son? Whyyyyyy?) and tells the heroine that he loves her. Well, it is more like 'If this is love, then I love you, you damn woman.'
And I was like...THAT is love? God help as all!

There was just a page or two left so I read it. If not I would have really stopped at the bastard SONS (does he have manly seed or what?) and be done with it all.

Splage FYI, there is adultery in this book and I know that is a big turnoff for you (he does have children by others, but they are never apart of the story). BUT it is one of my favorite books and Rolfe is the ultimate alpha.

Dinjolina Gonna make myself do it!
After Beyond scandal from Brenda Joyce i have no respect for her as an author. She is clearly obsessed with this adultery theme.
And to be frank I am not against these kinds of books-i loved the third book of the Queen of Babble from Meg Cabot that has so much cheating you have no idea who is with who,and I loved Tempt me tonight form Toni Blake...etc...
Its just that Brenda Joyce has these winy lame heroines that just put up whit all of it, and at best hate themselves... frustrating to the core... I have no idea what is her deal with men that cheat and woman that let them off the hook for no reasons...

Splage I definitely can see some of the whiny h in the DeWarenne series by Joyce. I didn't think the heroine was a whimp in the Conqueror, but strong and rebellious at the beginning and then madly in love and heartbroken in the end.

Dinjolina In the end?
Is it...not a happy ending? :/

Dinjolina P.S.My grammar sucks. I miss letters. Some of my sentences make no sense. I should not multitask, really. Its the fact that I use multiple firfox windows and tipetipe-tipe away all over the place. So...ugh...sorry!

Splage There is a beautiful HEA, not an easy one though, but definitely heartbreak in the final conflict. There is rape, forced seduction, lots of jealousy and the hero is extremely possessive. Love him!

Fiona Goodman I love this book to . It also gives a beginning to the De Warrene family, which continues into her more recent historicals. I like when you can start from the beginning and find out about a family's roots.

Anthi LOL!! Great review Dinjolina. I was a bodice ripper virgin until recently, I became acquainted with the genre when I read The Silver Devil which to my surprise I actually liked, but I think it was milder than what I expected.

Dinjolina Oh I have that on my wishlist! But was it good?
I like the rape, the drama, the besotted raging heroes but I just hate the nasty no reason adultery and bastards. For Pete's sake use French letters you moron! Medieval durex rocks, dude! :)

Yeah it was good actually! I really liked it and there's no cheating I promise! I didn't write a review but check my posts and comments and you'll have a clear picture of what the book is about and if you like it. i definitely recommend it though, http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

Vinaya Okay. This review was funny! Good job! :-)

Oh I did like your review as well Dinjolina! Even though I like the book, your review is hilarious.

Dinjolina @Anathi - hey was there not some cheating with some other man? Or some other homosexual stuff?
I don't mind,I never read about a bi hero in historical romances before!

@Vinaya-awww.Considering that I am so in love with you rews this is a lovely thing to say. Thanx. :)

@Fiona-thnx. Just not my kind of book. Or author. :(

message 14: by Anthi (new)

Anthi There were some homosexual stuff that happened way back, before he met the heroine, and no there is no cheating. The guy loses all interest for any other woman the moment he meets her, but we realize that very slowly from comments from other characters in the book.

Dinjolina But it is her POV only, right?

message 16: by Anthi (new)

Anthi Yes and that's why you realize it slowly and towards the end from things that other people say or do and finally from what he says to her in the end when he confesses his love.

message 17: by Anthi (new)

Anthi She thinks most of the time that he doesn't care for her.

Dinjolina Eh,gonna tray it any way :)

message 19: by Nisha (new)

Nisha Absolutely love the review. I've never read Brenda Joyce, I think I need to give her a try if you have such strong feelings abt her work.

Dinjolina She is going to piss you off! She writes horrible, all her characters cheat and/or have by blows/flocks of horrible children...and i can not stop reading. It's like getting stuck watching a soap opera! :D

message 21: by Nisha (new)

Nisha haha, alright, I will think carefully before attempting. Which one should I try first?

Dinjolina Hmmmm...do you want hr or cont?

message 23: by Nisha (new)

Nisha HR...I think...

Fiona Goodman Hi Sorry to jump in!!! I do have an exception of Brenda Joyce where neither the Hero or Herione neither cheat nor have scores of children. Scandalous Love and Before innocence!!!

I don't love many of her's, but I love, love these! If I would read anything by her, these would be it! Try them, you might like them......

Dinjolina Beyond Scandal

It was so stupid I read it in 3-4 hours :)

message 26: by Nisha (new)

Nisha ...I think I shall have to postpone reading Ms. Joyce's works.

Dinjolina Ooooh,why? :)
Try this:
More Than Friends

Hehe...I am insane I know... :)
Btw reading some sf,erotic, something from the woman that wrote all those cyborg books?
The forgotten:Discovery is the name of the book...very good! A lot is invested in world building and only a bit in sex. Makes it a erotic adventure!

Danielle The Book Huntress (Angels Weep For Goodreads) I stopped reading her because I realized I don't like her characters. Her books are mostly sex, which is okay if I like the story and the characters. If I don't, I might as well watch porn. She is way too cavalier about cheating, and her heroes are walking penises. Not much reason to keep reading her, to be honest. I haven't read this one, and I don't plan to do so.

message 29: by Nisha (new)

Nisha I need to mentally prepare myself, plus I'm not really in the mood for it, right now. And NO, I don't believe I shall be trying More Than Friends. It sounds...bad. Are you recommending "bad" books to me now?

Discovery sounds interesting. Who is it by, again?

Fiona Goodman Dinjolina wrote: "@Anathi - hey was there not some cheating with some other man? Or some other homosexual stuff?

That's okay. I am still looking for your m/f/m menage, submissive feminine male book. I was going to rec. 'Beyond Eden' but I saw that you already read it. Damn!

Dinjolina Nisha wrote: "I need to mentally prepare myself, plus I'm not really in the mood for it, right now. And NO, I don't believe I shall be trying More Than Friends. It sounds...bad. Are you recommending "bad" books ..."

Nah,I was just kidding :)
You know I tell you to avoid my 'avoid' pile :))
The discovery is by http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... Can't seem to find her in the add author section...Ninth orb is also good from the same author! But The forgotten is more funny :)

@Lady Danielle-whose books? The woman that wrote More the friends? Haven't read her books. Just this one and it made me fume so I will not try others :/

@Fina-well you and me both! :D After Beyond Eden, nothing! Small town siren was a good 'almost' thou. :)

Danielle The Book Huntress (Angels Weep For Goodreads) I was referring to Brenda Joyce, Dinjolina. I used to read her books back in the day and I gave up on her.

I did get 'Revelations' based on your rec though!

Karla "You would think with all the drama, betrayal and stuff there would be a plot. Not really. The author just took one random historical event, made up a few characters that behaved like morons and added some fighting and death. Nice."

This. And this book was incredibly shallow. I was hoping that the lame one-dimensional characters and boring focus on sex was an anomaly for this book and her others might be different, but that seems not to be the case. Crap. Well, I'll still give her another try since I've got some on the TBR, but consider my hopes dashed. :(

When I read this one, the H/h seemed like a walking peen/vag. I was bored by pg 100 and it never improved.
