I love how easy it is to jump back into a Night Huntress book. Cat and Bones and their chaotic lives are so familiar to me that I can't help being hooked from the first words. If there was any hope that they would get time to rest after the last round of trouble it was lost almost instantly. Picking up right where 'This Side of the Grave' ended, 'One Grave at a Time' is an action packed, trouble filled adventure.
It's amazing to see how much damage the undead can do. I'm not just talking about vampires and ghouls, because we've seen Cat and Bones destroy enough property to last a lifetime, but ghosts as well. Seemingly harmless, semi-sentient beings...not so much any more. Heinrich Kramer causes more trouble than I could have imagined. And proves getting rid of a ghost can be extremely difficult.
I don't like how there's more problems brewing in the future with Cat's old job. New leader Madigan needs a good dose of green-eyeing and perhaps a few hits over the head. I can tell we'll see more of him and I'm sure it won't be a warm and fussy meeting.
I love how stable Cat and Bones's relationship is in this book. We've seen then go through hell on multiple occasions, and often being forced apart more than once in one book. It's nice to see that they're working together more, there was less worry that something would drag them apart, even though they're never quite safe from danger. I wish they'd had the chance to be more intimate, but with the circumstances they were in, it was hard to get a moment alone.
I adore Ian. When we first met him in 'One Foot in the Grave' I thought he was annoying and rude. But after seeing him in the later books (especially, 'First Drop of Crimson', Spade and Denise's book) I can't help but love him. I find myself laughing whenever he turns up, and I laugh more because of how much he annoys Cat and rest of the gang. I hope to see more of him in the future.
Fantastic book. I'm sad I've finished it already, more waiting until the next one.
