Valerie I tried to read this while I was in college, and I was strongly put off by what I saw as the hectoring, bullying attitude of the shaman.

I might change my mind if I reread it. At the time, I didn't know much about the pressures on traditional shamans to abandon their beliefs, so that only strong-willed (even fanatical) people could sustain the old ways. But pretty generally, my response is that reciprocal bullying is not a solution to anything. If there are other valid responses to life (and there have to be), they shouldn't be taught as 'disciplines'. This just escalates the problems.
