Not sure what to make of this book really.
On the one hand the underlying point of comparing intelligence and consciousness is extremely clever and though provoking. The aliens are very very different and reasonably well presented.
On the other side of the coin, I think the book seemed to be a kluge of ideas taken from different scientific papers but without total understanding. The story jumps around in unexpected places and takes the reader out of the most interesting parts with babbling flashbacks. Having a vampire in the story was to me like having the aliens from Mars Attacks in the end of 2001... Made me cringe.
Overall, great ideas but flawed by bad structure and some absurd science (vampires). The author has pages of references at the end of the book and more explanation on his website. For me, a book that requires that much justification is an epic fail in terms of communicating the story.
