Jon Steele’s ‘The Watchers’

I was sent this for review purposes and was quite eager to read it.

The descriptions are vivid, the characters detailed and the twists and turns of the plot, once it gets going, vary from the predictable to the unexpected.

It was a slow read. The writing is lovely and the setting brought to life clearly. I could see this in my minds eye as a stage play unfolding. The first third of the novel set the scene for a fairly tight thriller but I’m afraid I rather guessed the ending from the title and the occasional Biblical references, but that may be only because I’ve read extensively around the subject. It should come as more of a surprise to the general reader. None of the three main characters ever really engaged my sympathy though I did want to find out how they were changed by the events.

On the whole I enjoyed the novel, and would recommend it.
