I read this book primarily because Anna Quindlen wrote it, but it is my least favorite of her books. The story is about a recently released prisoner who is hired by an elderly recluse as her yard man. One morning he is startled to find that a newborn has been left on his doorstep. He takes the child in and learns to care for her, while trying to meet the high standards and tolerate the crankiness of his demanding employer. As with many of Anna Quindlen's books, there is no saccharine happy-ever-after ending. It's about life as it really happens, with all the warts and sorrows. Worth reading, but read Quindlen's others first.
