Mukherjee's extraordinary tale about the ever-changing identity of an immigrant helped me improve the identities of my own characters. She relates Jasmine's always altering identity to the current setting she exist within, making the connection that external environment has with internal development. This is extremely important when creating characters who undergo change. The change has to come from somewhere, and by constantly revamping the character's setting, this change in identity becomes inevitable for the character. Mukherjee does a superb job of showing the importance that identity has on the outcome and development of the story.
