An epic story the follows the lives of three generations of Trueba women that ultimately tells the history of a nation. While it is classified as 'magical realism' the story is layered, complex and beautiful. There are many episodes of barbarism and violence among the male characters towards the females but the strong-wiled women finds ways to incorporate this into their daily lives and turn it into a tool to make them not only stronger but ultimately superior to the males.

One of my favorites of the year.
