I think it is a measure of some writers that they can encourage and cajole readers to complete books when the main character is very unappealing and immoral. McEwan has succeeded in this. The humour is very black, the situations farcical, yet you are drawn in. I think this is because McEwan has done his research and he can describe the process of compartmentalisation and fully convey the arrogance of the feted. Also, the story is beautifully controlled, the remembered snippets of memory are interwoven in naturalstic way.
