I really enjoyed this book. It has the format of your typical murder-mystery, but instead there's magic--part unraveling the mystery of magic, part discovering the motives of the killers, part learning who you can really trust. The setting could have been deeper, but it was enough to start off the series. The main character, Portier, took a while to figure out, but since the plot was interesting enough I didn't get hung up on that. The prose is rather formal, kind of like a Jane Austin book--I liked it, even if it took a couple chapters to get into the groove. I have the sequel, THE SOUL MIRROR reserved at the library.
