I thought this was a fairly fresh concept and a well executed one. It's characters were believable, rounded and some very interesting and complex. This first, the obligatory teen heroine who has never fit in finds out why, must leave those she loves to protect them, and is introduced to a new world undreamed of for good and evil. In fantasy one can't avoid the archetypal characters or bare bones plot. What matters is execution and a fresh approach with a few surprising twists. Hocking does this and handles the first novel in such a series--exposition and explanations of her novel's mythology--with a light deft touch never overwhelming the story and introducing it in unforced ways. It is not a rock-your-world novel that gets under your skin or raises questions of moral and ethical realities that you can't shake thinking about but it was a story I wanted to continue read to see what happened to Wendy and Finn. That is not as easy as it sounds.
