I had a hard time getting through this book because I was only able to sit down with it for a few minute at a time. Maybe that's why it was hard for me to follow all the characters and keep their stories straight. Plus, I felt like the story was a bit disjointed, but that's probably because of the circumstnces in which it was written. I think I would have preferred to have the author's own eye-witness account of France's occupation by German troops and her imprisonment in a concentration camp. All that aside, the writing really is superb. Her descriptions of people, nature, weather, etc. are amazing and the irony in the stories of the superficial aristocrats (and their subsequent downfalls) almost made me laugh out loud!
