4.5 stars. Delicious, creepy and dark. I can’t believe I haven’t read this before. The protagonist (whose first name we do not know) is a young naïf. While acting as a crazy lady's personal maid in Monte Carlo, the future Mrs. de Winter meets, falls in love with, and eventually marries a dashing widower who owns the ominous, gothic estate of Manderley. I loved the way this was told, almost in retrospect, which made it all the creepier. The narrator’s innocence was well-played as were the various twists and turns throughout the story. The conclusion was surprising and perfect. All in, a terrific and exciting read. Definitely kept me up late into the night.

Sandra I read this book while I was in my senior year in school and I do believe pretty much everything went over my head - I do however remember enjoying the read. Maybe a book to re-read after 20 odd years?
