I have listened to the debate over the rising cost of health care always with the obvious question in mind: "Why?" And I've been puzzled that the debate never seems to address this issue. The most I've heard is finger-pointing from one group to another. So, I was pretty excited to read a review of this book. I was first of all impressed that it was written by a Harvard business professor who spent a decade studying the industry. He applies the business models he's successfully used for other industries to show how the cost of health care can drop while quality and accessability can improve. I like that he's written it from an outside perspective (as opposed to hospitals or doctors or insurance companies trying to explain the high costs but who feel they need to defend their turf) and that the study was sufficiently lengthy enough to provide depth to a very complex industry. It was superbly done. The book is essentially a business book and is therefore written in business-ese. He uses liberally terms like opportunity cost, net present value, supply chain. As a business major, I felt comfortable with these but he also uses terms of his own creation extensively: disruptive innovation, value network, solution shops, value-added-processes, etc. The only time these are inhibiting is in the introduction when he tries to give an overview of the premises of the book without the explanatory detail. In other words: don't let the intro intimidate you. Once he gets into the chapters, his ample examples fully explain and illustrate his terms and concepts. It was enlightening from a business perspective as well as from an end-user of health care. While the challenges in this industry are large, I finished the book with hope for change. And change can't happen until someone figures out what needs to happen...thank goodness someone finally has.
