I picked this book up when I noticed several of my students reading it, and I wanted to see what had them so intrigued. The book provides a real and gritty view of life as a member of Chicago's Latin Kings. Having spent my whole life in the near south suburbs of Chicago, this book became even more real as the streets and places are all familiar to me.

The book tells the story of how, former King, Lil Loco gets involved with the gang in his search for family and protection, his experiences with drugs, sex, and violence as he climbs the ranks, and finally his experience in being violated out of the gang.
