I have very mixed thoughts about this book. On one level, I really, really enjoyed it. I love the way that Kay chooses a historical period/place and makes it recognizable but is not totally bound to it. I also found myself very caught up in the story--enough to find it really annoying that the first book just ended with no attempt to have a discrete plot. On the other hand, after reading Tigana and this book, I believe that Kay either does not like women or fundamentally does not understand them. It's not enough to keep me from reading the second book in the Sarantine Mosaic (now that I'm invested), but it might keep me from reading more of his books.
