Broad ranging, yet focused, Schroth's study presents a compendium of almost five centuries of one organization's influence on the North American continent. He takes poetic license to dramatize some scenes from early in the history, when records are scarce and limited to journals and correspondence. Later, especially towards the Civil War and establishment of Jesuit educational institutions, his references become more thorough, his analysis more coherent, and his dedication to presenting what was most compelling about these efforts (while not ignoring shortcomings or ill-conceived agendas) develops into a more balanced presentation...although he doesn't shy from a bias towards lay initiatives and independence from Rome.
